HabitatOpen grassland, ridge slopes, exposed steppe

Ecological RolePollinator support; aesthetic marker; early bloom-season indicator

The Windflower is a pale-petalled blossom — white shading to the softest blue at the petal edges — perfectly adapted to the powerful winds of the Taurian steppe. Its thin, flexible stem bends easily without snapping, and its root system spreads wide and shallow, anchoring it in even shallow rocky soil. When a full meadow of Windflowers blooms at once, the plains appear dusted with pale light beneath the open sky.

The tribe used Windflower garlands at the first Festival of Roots in Alcyone. The flowers last three days once cut, and their faint clean scent fills an enclosed space pleasantly.

Giliad's Field Note

The petals are not blue as such — they are white with a quality of blue in them, the way shadows on snow are not grey but the suggestion of every colour at once. I have written 'pale silver-white, edged with the colour of distance.' I am not satisfied with this but it is better than 'sort of blue-ish.' — G.
