A living mountain, patient as stone

Stoneback Grazer

ClassificationMassive Mineral-Plated Herbivore — Landscape Shaper
HabitatBroad plains, rocky terrain, ancient migration corridors
PlanetTauria
Ecological RoleLandscape reshaping; mineral cycling; creation of permanent migration corridors

Few creatures embody the stubborn endurance of Tauria more completely than the Stoneback Grazer. These enormous herbivores carry mineral-like plates embedded along their backs — not horn or bone, but true geological mineral accumulation within the living hide, growing slowly over decades as Tauria's iron-rich soil works its way into the animal's living structure.

A fully mature Stoneback stands taller than two warriors and weighs as much as a loaded river barge. They move with the absolute patience of something that has never needed to hurry. When a herd of Stonebacks migrates across the plain, their passing leaves permanent ruts and channels in the soil.

Giliad's Field Note

"Dendera found the first one and sent a runner for me as if it were a military emergency. When I arrived I understood why. It is the size of a granary. It did not acknowledge my existence. The oldest individual I have examined has a back that catches the light at dawn like hammered metal. I have called it Vedra in my notes. I am not supposed to do this. — G."
