Wings of smoke and ember
A bird of the volcanic thermals, with wings that shift between smoke and ember. Its feathers leave faint trails of light against the sky. The Ash-Hawk cannot be commanded — it demands respect, not dominance.
One such hawk led Rae and Helle to the Ember Flowers that purified the corrupted mine air. It circled the Aries war column on the morning of their march, and was not seen again until the end.
The Ash-Hawk rides the updrafts from lava rivers and volcanic vents, barely moving its wings as it traces slow arcs across the sky. Its plumage shifts with the thermals — amber at dawn, grey-white at midday, trailing ember-light at dusk. When it stoops, it falls like a cinder dropping from a high fire.
